Setting the Stage:
- There were a lot of disasters. he Church divided the plague killed many so many died the economy changed. Wars led to change in government in France and England.
A Church Divided:
- Age of Faith still strong but both the pope and the Church were in desperate trouble.
Pope and King Collide:
- Pope Boniface III tried to enforce papa; authority to kings. When the French king had power over the French bishops the pope made an official document thaT STATED THAT KINGS MUST ALWAYs obey popes.
- Philip the king of france didn't obey the pope but instead he held him prisoner. The king planned to bring him to france for trial. The pope was rescued but Boniface died A MONTH LATER. Never again would popes be able to force monarchs to obey him.
Avignon and the Great Schism:
- Philip IV persuaded the College of Cardinals to appoint
Clement V as pope who then moved from Rome to Avignon and popes would live there for the next 69 years.
-This move weakened the church. When pope Gregory XI died there was a mob chanting and then an Italian was made pope. pope Urban VI. Pope Urban VI was so bad that another pope was elected just a few months later.
- Not there were two popes. They both were excommunicating his rival. One lived in Rome and the other in Avignon. they began to split the Church.
- The Council of Constance tried to end the splitting by choosing one pope. But there were now three popes the last two and then a pope elected by a council at Pisa. They forced all the popes to resign. A new pope was then chosen (Martin V) this ended the Great Schism.
Scholars Challenge Church Authority:
- John Wycliffe said Jesus was the real leader of the Church. He thought the clergy should own no land or wealth.e helped spread an English translation of the New Testament.
- Jan Hus was influenced by John Wycliffe also taught that the Authority of the bible was much greater than that of the pope.He was seized by Church Leaders and was tried as a heretic and then burned at the stake.
